photography hints for guests

Before the wedding

  • It’s very boring but… spend some time reading the manual and learn at least the basics of how to use the camera.

  • Pack a spare camera battery… just in case.

  • If you’re using a film camera for the wedding photographs pack more film than you think you will need.

  • If you are taking wedding photographs with a digital camera, ensure you have more memory than you think you will need.

On the wedding day

  • When taking wedding photographs, have the lens-cap off!

  • If you are using a film camera ensure it is correctly loaded with film.

  • Take wedding photographs with simple backgrounds.

  • Fill the frame with your subject, if in doubt get in closer.

  • Try to avoid photographing in harsh, high contrast light.

  • Avoid double chins; generally don’t take photographs looking up at people.

  • Watch out for big hats that place the face in deep shade.

  • Have a spare camera battery, just in case.

  • Take some photographs while people are not posing; you may get some very pleasant surprises.

  • Take plenty of wedding photographs, the day is unique, forget the expense!

After the wedding

  • If you used film get it processed promptly.

  • Avoid subjecting film to airport x-ray machines or heat.
